Joshua 1:9 (New King James Version)
Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.
Buttercups have always been my favorite flower.  While I love them for their simple beauty, I admire them most for their courage.  They fearlessly blaze the trail for springtime to follow.
Every year, I watch in amazement as they boldly begin to pop their yellow blooms through the frozen ground in early February.  The chilly nights repeatedly try to force them down, but each morning finds them pressing even harder toward the sun.  Buttercups are determined to rise above the challenge.  They have no fear – just faith.
As I pick a beautiful bouquet of buttercups for my table, it’s as if God is encouraging me to bloom during the harsh, bleak seasons of my life.  I am reminded of one of the first songs I remember writing as a child.  I’m not sure how old I was – maybe nine or ten – but I have never forgotten the words:
“God bless the buttercup, that had enough courage to grow, in the middle of the wintertime, in the middle of a snow.”
